On a cool and windy late afternoon the Google softball team had there first game of the 2008 season versus Amerities. This year the only scrambling was the coach running back to the datacenter to grab the scorebook. No scrambling to find enough women to field a team. We were able to field a full team of 10.
The team jelled very quickly. First inning we held them scoreless. Nikki caught a line drive pop at 3rd. Chavez scored the first inning to put us ahead 1 - 0. 2nd inning Amerities came on strong scoring 5 runs, but we held in there. We were only able to respond with one run. 3rd inning we kept them to just 1 run with some good fielding by Chavez at short-stop and Tyler in the outfield. We responded with 5 runs with nice hits by Joe and Shaun to tie things up again. 4th inning Amerities jumped ahead again scoring 3 runs and we didn't score any. But then the next 3 inning we held them scoreless with continued fielding efforts and added another run. Going into the bottom of the 7th inning we were behind 8 to 9. Christie led off the batting and hit a solid single to get on base. Tim followed up with a single that got Christie to 3rd. So we had runners at 1st and 3rd. Nikki was next up. She hit toward the pitcher who tried to get Christie out going into home, but she made it home, Nikki made it to 1st and Tim made it to 3rd. Next batter up fly'd out. Then Danilelle hit solidly to short center field. Nikki was forced out by the throw to 2nd base but Amerities fumbled the throw to first and Tim was able to score the winning run.
So yes, we won our first game. Good job team!
